[FYI request #31784 email]
Dear Rick,
Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 28 July 2025. You
requested:
I am writing under the Official Information Act to request details regarding a police
operation that appeared to take place near my residence on 27 July 2025 at
approximately 7:30 PM.
Upon reviewing security camera footage from that evening, I observed a uniformed
police officer near our front lawn racking (or chambering) a service firearm. This
occurred in Sholto Duncan Crescent, which is typically a quiet area aside from
occasional reports of vehicle theft.
Could you please provide:
- The nature and purpose of the police activity in the area at that time and location.
- Whether the officer's handling of the firearm was part of a planned operation or
response.
- Any relevant incident reports or summaries associated with that operation
Police responded to a nearby report, this turned out to be a misunderstanding with a toy.
The matter was resolved and filed with no further Police action.
As this matter relates to the private information of others, we have withheld the
information you are requesting in accordance with section 9(2)(a) of the OIA, as the
withholding of the information is necessary to protect the privacy of natural persons,
including that of deceased natural persons.
Police considers the interests requiring protection by withholding the information are not
outweighed by any public interest in release of the information.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
