Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation (DOC), received on 28 July
2025, in which you asked for:
information on whether the Department of Conservation holds any water temperature data
collected by sensors fixed in place (for example, moorings, buoys or loggers) within New
Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone. If such datasets exist, please advise:
•
The sampling frequency or interval between measurements (e.g., minutes or hours);
and
•
The geographic location(s) or area(s) where the sensors are deployed.
I am not requesting copies of the data themselves; I simply wish to know whether the data
exists and, if so, the sampling rate and geographic coverage.
We have considered your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the OIA). Our
response is provided below.
DOC manages two buoys that collect daily information on ocean surface temperature, wind
speed and direction, and wave height. These are located at the Poor Knights Marine Reserve
and Tuhua Marine Reserve. Data collected by the buoys is publicly available on the following
websites:
• Poor Knights Marine Reserve:
https:/ aqualink.org/sites/3293
• Tuhua Marine Reserve:
https:/ aqualink.org/sites/8819
Many datasets that fall within the scope of your request are held by universities, NIWA (within
Earth Sciences New Zealand), or regional councils. You may wish to reach out to these entities
for further information.
