Thank you for your request of 22 July 2025, to Fire and Emergency New Zealand requesting 
information relating to Type 4 and relief aerial appliances. Your request has been considered 
under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) and our response is below. 
 
•  While Fire and Emergency NZ has purchased new type 5 and 6 appliances, it has assessed 
and made plans to replace its ageing type 4 Aerial fleet, given some of these appliances are 
used as front-line appliances in large metro areas such as El erslie and Te Atatu, as wel  as 
providing the main aerial capability to regional cities around NZ. 
 
1.  Has FENZ been running Type 4 appliances in Auckland as pumps only on frontline 
response with no ladder capability due to breakdowns while not having enough relief 
ladder appliances to cover Type 4 being off for repairs? 
 
We can confirm this did occur at one fire station. 
 
2.  Has FENZ planned for type 5 and 6 relief appliances once the new aerials arrive? What 
wil  FENZ do with the existing type 5 and 6s they wil  replace? 
 
Fire and Emergency has plans for the relief Type 5 and 6 appliances. These appliances will be 
either: 
 
•  disposed of where they are considered to be at end of life 
•  real ocated to other stations; or 
•  reallocated into the relief fleet replacing other appliances considered to be at end of life.
