[FYI request #31690 email]
Dear Brendon
Thank you for your email of 22 July 2025 requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Do you have an agenda to get rid of all council, and government owned council housing,
and have religous organisation deliver housing?
I do not have an agenda to get rid of council or government-owned social housing.
I reject the assertion that I want religious organisations to deliver social housing. Registered
Community Housing Providers (CHPs) must manage their social housing provision separately from
any other support services they offer. Without an appropriate separation of services, tenants may
feel obligated to accept support services out of concern that any refusal to accept services the
landlord offers may put their tenancy at risk. Registered CHPs are regulated by the Community
Housing Regulatory Authority.
Your request is refused under section 18(g)(i) of the Act, as the information requested is not held
by me and I have no grounds for believing that the information is held by another Minister or
government department.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of my response by the Ombudsman, in
accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details can be found on the Ombudsman’s
website at:
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz. Yours sincerely
Hon Chris Bishop
Minister of Housing
