Official Information Act request: Community Magistrates – North Island
Thank you for your email of 20 July 2025, requesting under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act), information relating to expressions of interest sought for appointment of
Community Magistrates to be based in the North Island. Specifically, you requested:
May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call
for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. Also, how many applications you have
received from the public and how many you have received from other nominating
agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you have
shortlisted and how many you have interviewed. When you expect the process will
concluded and how many vacancy you had this round- 2025
For ease of reference, I have separated out your request and responded to each question
separately.
1. May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call
for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website.
Calls for expressions of interest were advertised on the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry)
website and via the LawTalk, LawNews and Capital Letter publications. A letter was also
sent by the Associate Minister of Justice, Hon Nicole McKee to coalition members seeking
nominations.
2. How many applications you have received from the public and how many you have
received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for
your role.
Thirty-one applications were received from the public; none were made by way of
nomination.
3. How many you have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed.

Various factors mean it is difficult to provide a specific timeframe of when the recruitment
round may be completed. However, it is hoped that interviews will take place in the next few
weeks.
