Dear James,
Information Request
I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 20 July 2025, in which you
requested information relating to Police’s car fleet.
Please find below a response to each of your questions.
1. Current number of Police vehicles in rainbow colours.
There are currently three Police vehicles with rainbow livery in active service.
2. Cost of each subsequent vehicle (after 2018 which cost $10,000 and came from the
recruitment budget) having the rainbow colours applied and what budget the costs
came from?
This information is withheld under section 9(2)(b)(i ) of the OIA, as withholding of this
information is necessary to protect information where the making available of the information
would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who supplied or
who is the subject of the information.
3. Al emails, texts, letters etc relating to each subsequent vehicle in rainbow colours since
the first, in 2018. This should include who initiated the request for additional vehicles in
rainbow colours, sign off/authorisation and budgets.
Due to the substantial col ation that would be required across both Police and external vendor
systems, the request for all emails, texts, letters etc. relating to each subsequent vehicle in
rainbow colours is withheld under section 18(f) of the OIA, as the information requested cannot
be made available without substantial collation or research.
4. The name of the districts where the vehicles are stationed.
The three active vehicles are based in Waitemata, Wel ington and Canterbury Districts.
5. The company who applied the rainbow colours.
Our third-party fitout provider, Wade Group, either applied the livery on site or supplied the
livery to district for application by a local service dealer.

6. Prices/quotes and specifics for the work and al communications between Police and
the supplier regarding this.
Due to the substantial col ation that would be required across both Police and our external
vendor systems, the request for all communications between Police and the supplier regarding
this work is withheld under section 18(f) of the OIA, as the information requested cannot be
made available without substantial col ation or research.
The request for prices/quotes and specifics for the work is withheld under section 9(2)(b)(ii) of
the OIA, as withholding this information is necessary to protect information where making
available of the information would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of
the person who supplied it or is the subject of the information.
Police can confirm that costs and communication for approved livery application would be
managed between Wade Group and the relevant district. This includes confirming specific
requirements, scheduling, and raising purchase orders from the district budget for payment
upon completion of the work.
If you are not satisfied with any aspect of the decisions made in this response you are entitled to
complain to the Office of the Ombudsman and seek an investigation and review.
Yours sincerely
