Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 14 July 2025. You
requested:
The number of charges, prosecutions, and convictions under both the Wanganui
District Council (Prohibition of Gang Insignia) Act 2009 and the Prohibition of
Gang Insignia in Government Premises Act 2013. To be clear, I request data for
these Acts from the date of royal assent to the date of repeal for each Act.
Your request was partial y transferred to the Ministry of Justice as that is the ministry
which holds the information requested about convictions.
The fol owing tables show the number of charges (prosecutions) in relation to gang
insignia, by year.
Please note that these figures may differ to figures published elsewhere as they count all
proceedings against an offender that involving at least one ‘Displayed Gang Insignia’
offence, which may not have been the most serious offence for which an offender was
proceeded against on each occasion.
A proceeding counts each separate occasion when Police deal with an alleged offender
for one or more offences. Proceedings for official statistics are usual y classified
according to the most serious offence that the offender is dealt with on that occasion.
