Dear Matua Kahurangi
Official Information Act request for information about Preventing and Countering
Violent Extremism Fund
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request received on 11 July 2025.
You requested:
“I write to you to ask for the following information:
1. A breakdown of all organisations and individuals who have received
funding under the "Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Fund"
since 15 March 2019 to present.
2. Include the amount of money they have received and why they have
received the money.
3. What is the total amount of grants handed out under the Preventing and
Countering Violent Extremism Fund since its inception?”
The Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Fund was set up in 2022 to support
community and civil society organisations to deliver programmes which counter and build
resilience to violent extremism and radicalisation. It was led by the Department of the Prime
Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) and funded and administered through the Department of
Internal Affairs (DIA). Funding for the final round was allocated in October 2024. Five million
dollars was allocated over the three years for the Fund.
Details about the grants allocated are published on DPMC’s website at:
www.dpmc.govt.nz/our-programmes/national-security/counter-terrorism/preventing-and-
countering-violent-extremism-fund. You will find here lists of each project that received grants from the four rounds of allocations
over the three years the fund operated. Included are the names of the project, the amounts
of each grant allocated and descriptions of each of the projects that were funded, thus
providing the purpose of that grant.
The total amount of funding allocated was $3.85 million dollars over the three years to 42
projects.
As this information is already publicly available, I am refusing your request under section
18(d) of the Act.
Once you have had a chance to review the details provided here about the projects, please
get in touch with us again, if this information does not satisfy your request.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
