  Official Information Act request OIA 25.304 – Navy and Defence Research spending   
  I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 12 July 2025 for information relating to Nay and 
Defence Research spending. You have specifical y requested: 
•  Under the Official Information Act, I am requesting information regarding any research or funding 
connections between the University of Canterbury, (its departments, associated academics, and other 
bodies) and the United States Department of the Navy/U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, including the 
United States Office of Naval Research. 
 
•  I further request information regarding any research or funding connections between the University of 
Canterbury (its departments, associated academics, and other bodies) and the United States 
Department of Defence. 
 
•  These information requests include, but is not limited to, names of academics or researchers who 
receive funding from these sources, the quantity of funding, and the names of any programs or 
research projects concerned. 
 
  
We note the correspondence between yourself and the Information and Records Management team regarding 
the timeframe for this request. Therefore, al  research and consultancy funding executed on or after 1 January 
2015 until 30 June 2025 was searched for this request. 
 
One record was found in consultancy that is within the scope of this request. However, information regarding 
this record is withheld under s 6(a) of the Act, to prevent prejudice to the security or defence of New Zealand. 
Where the names of staff are available through research being previously published, their names are provided 
in this response. Otherwise, the names of staff and their departments are withheld under s 6(d) of the Act, 
where the making available of the information would be likely to endanger the safety of any person.  
  You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
