Official Information Act request relating to Proud boys designation 
 
Thank you for your request made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), received 
on 4 July 2025. You requested: 
 
“ -copies of advice given to the Prime Minister and/or Minister of Police regarding the 
designation of Proud Boys as a terrorist organisation either in advance of, or 
subsequent to, its listing being allowed to lapse in 2025. 
 
-Any information whether in written or verbal briefings, emails or texts since its listing 
as a terrorist organisation about New Zealand citizens or residents who identify or 
present themselves as ''Proud Boys'' on social media ” 
 
I believe part of your request for copies of advice given to the Prime Minister is more closely 
connected to the functions of the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Christopher Luxon. In addition, any 
copies of advice given to the Minister of Police is more closely connected to the functions of 
the Minister of Police, Hon Mark Mitchell. 
 
Accordingly, I have decided to transfer these parts of your request to the Prime Minister and 
Minister Mitchell under section 14(b)(ii) of the Act for information they may hold that is not 
covered by our response. The other parts of the request have not been transferred, and I will 
respond in due course. 
 
The  Prime  Minister  and  Minister  Mitchell  have  the  usual  timeframes  under  the  Act  from 
receipt of this transfer to make a decision on your request.
