Dear Michael Riconosciuto
Official Information Act request: American Proud Boys terrorist designation
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 30 June 2025.
You requested:
“
I request any information held by PMO regarding the expiry of the terrorist
designation for the American Proud Boys.”
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) is currently preparing for
publication the key documents relevant to the decision of whether to renew the designation
of “The American Proud Boys” as a terrorist entity under the Terrorism Suppression Act
2002. The documents wil be published soon on the DPMC website at
www.dpmc.govt.nz/publications. Accordingly, I have refused your request as it relates to these documents under section 18(d)
of the Act – the information requested wil soon be publicly available, subject to some
information being withheld under sections 6 and 9 of the Act.
For the remainder of your request, I have decided under section 15A of the Act to extend the
time limits for deciding on your request by an additional 8 working days.
The extension is required because of the consultations needed to make a decision on your
request. Despite the extension, a response wil be sent to you as soon as possible.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely
