Thank you for your email dated 17 June 2025 requesting information as follows:
I noted, you have recently call for nomination for your Competence Authority
May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for public
nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad as well. Also, how many applications you
have received from the public and how many you have received from other nominating agencies
such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you have shortlisted and how many
you have interviewed. Also, can I request to view the appointment letter if there is one sent to the
previous appointee and what's the pay rate. I am happy for you to remove all the personal
information.
We have considered these requests under the Official Information Act 1982 and can advise as follows.
Competence Authority Nominations – Advertisement
The Council advertised for position on 13 June 2025 via Seek and our website. A copy of the
advertisement has been attached to this response.
Competence Authority Nominations – Applicants
The Council received 26 applicants. No applicants were nominated by Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry for
Women, or any other nominating agency. Of those 26 applicants six were shortlisted. Interviews are
currently being conducted with shortlisted candidates and will conclude on 17 July 2025. Once decisions
are made, successful candidates shall receive notice of their appointment, a copy of which is attached to
this release.

Competency Authority – LAY Panel Member

Matatū Aotearoa | Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional body for kaiako
| teachers, providing direction for the teaching profession from early childhood education through
primary and secondary schooling in both English and Māori medium settings. We honour Te Tiriti
o Waitangi and are committed to lifting the status and mana of the teaching profession, learning
collaboratively with kaiako, supporting quality leadership and teaching, and strengthening the
regulatory and disciplinary framework in a fit-for-purpose way.
Mō te tūranga | About the opportunity:
We are seeking LAY members to join the Competency Authority (CA) Panel for a three-year term. A
"lay member" generally refers to a person who is not a professional or expert in a particular field or
profession, but who participates in a committee, board, or organisation related to that field.
As a panel member, you will contribute to deliberations and decisions, determining whether a
teacher's practice meets the required level of competence and deciding the most appropriate
outcomes for complaints and reports referred to the Competency Authority.
Panel members must be available to attend meetings in Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington and
prepare by reviewing all information presented. Domestic travel within Aotearoa | New Zealand
may be required, and commitment to preparatory work for meetings is essential.

The ideal candidate will have previous board and/or governance experience in a similar role, a
strong sense of fairness, and the ability to uphold the mana of teaching. Effective communication
and listening skills are crucial.
To be successful, you will possess the following attributes:
• Strong competency in Tikanga, Te Ao Māori, and Te Reo Māori is an advantage
• Demonstrated competency, understanding and/or knowledge of Pasifika values and
cultures. Fluency in a Pasifika language is also an advantage
• Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and understanding its application in schools, kura, and
early childhood settings
• Demonstrated educational leadership through support of colleagues and reporting teams
in their ongoing professional learning
• Ability to contribute to well-reasoned discussions and decisions, and be receptive to views
expressed by other panel members
• Free from bias and conversant with the principles of natural justice
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, especially in group settings
• Confidence to ask questions when information is unclear or unsound
• Awareness of the views, expectations, and attitudes of parents and whānau in the
communities of Aotearoa | New Zealand
