Thank you for your email of 2 June 2025, which was transferred to the Ministry of Education (the
Ministry) on 3 June 2025, requesting the following information:
I noted, you have recently call for nomination for Appointment of Chair and Deputy Chair to
the Tertiary Education Commission | Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua

May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for
public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad as well. Also, how many
applications you have received from the public and how many you have received from other
nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. How many you
have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed. Also, can I request to view the
appointment letter if there is one sent to the appointee. I am happy for you to remove all the
personal information.
Also, may I request the job description for the appointed role (Chair and Deputy Chair).

Your request has been considered under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The call for public nominations was published on 8 March 2024 on the ‘Crown entity and other
statutory board appointments’ page on the Ministry’s website at the following link:
www.education.govt.nz/our-work/our-role-and-our-people/what-we-do/crown-appointments/#sh-
statutory%20appointments. On 3 April 2024, the advertisement was amended to reflect the revised
working days of the Chair and updated fees. The Ministry of Education also alerted nominating
agencies to the call for expressions of interest and sought details of potential candidates from the
Institute of Directors. Please see

website at the time.

Twenty-two expressions of interest were received via the Ministry’s website, either exclusively in
respect to the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) appointments, or in respect to TEC and one
or more of the other boards identified in the call for expressions of interest.
Six nominations were received from nominating agencies or from individuals who had been alerted
to the call for expressions of interest by nominating agencies.
Twelve individuals were selected for further consideration subject to confirmation of interest and
availability. Following confirmation of interest and availability, discussions were held with seven
individuals.

appointment letters as out of scope of your request.

Appendix A
Expressions of interest for appointment to Education Sector boards in 2024
The Minister of Education, and the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skil s, wil be making
appointments to the following boards in 2024:
• Tertiary Education Commission (TEC),
• New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA),
• Education New Zealand (ENZ),
• Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura), and
• New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO).
We are seeking expressions of interest in these appointments. The appointments are expected to
be for three-year terms, with a possibility for reappointment.
We are looking for the following experience and skil s across each of these boards: governance
and leadership experience, knowledge about the education system, finance and risk expertise, and
other relevant skil s and experience that contribute to well-functioning boards.

• The Chair has an expected 50 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board
business. The fee is $47,628 per annum.
• Board members have an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting at endance and other
board business. The fee is $23,520 per annum.
