Dear David Adamson
Official Information Act request: Comments made by Hon Chris Bishop at the
Aotearoa Music Awards
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 31 May 2025.
You requested:
“Please provide any communications you have sent or received, including text
messages, emails, other messaging services, or recollections of conversions
and phone calls regarding Chris Bishop making inappropriate comments at the
AMA awards. This includes any discussion around if it is appropriate for the
Leader of the House and a senior Minister to be making these comments and
if, when considering the Government’s stance of punishing of the Māori Party
for performing a haka in the House, there is concern around optics and the
Government appearing racist.
Please identify if you’ve deemed any messages outside your role as Prime
Minister and instead Leader of the National Party (and therefore not included
in this OIA) so this can potentially be tested with the Ombudsman if
necessary.”
As reported widely at the time, the Prime Minister spoke to Hon Chris Bishop over that
weekend about the matter and other issues.
The only other information identified as relevant to your request was that I, as the Prime
Minister’s Chief of Staff, had a phone call with the Prime Minister at 8.29pm on Friday
30 May, during which I updated the Prime Minister on the issue.
For completeness, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my
decision under section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely
Cameron Burrows
Chief of Staff
