Dear Raman
OIA 25.280 Academic Background Master of Audiology students
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 26 May 2025 regarding the academic
backgrounds of Master of Audiology students. You have specifical y requested:
•
I am writing to request information regarding the academic backgrounds of students who have been
admitted to the Master of Audiology program at the University of Canterbury in recent years. As I
come from a different academic background and have not completed a degree specifically in speech
and hearing sciences, I am particularly interested in understanding whether students with diverse
undergraduate qualifications have been accepted into the program as I'm not from hearing and
speech background, I'm having different qualification.
•
Could you kindly provide any available statistical data or general information on the types and names
of undergraduate degrees held by successful applicants in previous admission cycles?
Please see the link for a video explaining the Master of Audiology qualification, referencing the different
academic backgrounds at 2.
21 here.
When the academic background of Master of Audiology students was reviewed a few years ago, approximately
a third had come from a Bachelors of Speech-Language Pathology background. The remainder came from a
diverse range of science and non-science backgrounds e.g. languages, music, music production, business and
finance.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
