OIA: 1347317 – Breakdown of NEX Funding Use by Science-Related Subject Associations
Thank you for your email of 7 May 2025 to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) via the FYI
website requesting the following information:
I am seeking a breakdown of how Teacher Development Aotearoa (NEX Funding) was spent
by science-related subject associations between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024. In
particular, I am interested in funding awarded to or used by the following associations:

•  New Zealand Association of Science Educators (NZASE)
•  Secondary Chemistry Educators of New Zealand (SCENZ)
•  New Zealand Institute of Physics (NZIP) education arm

Please provide:

1.  The total amount of NEX funding allocated to each of the above associations during the
period.
2.  A detailed breakdown of how each association spent or intends to spend the funds (e.g.
staffing, travel, resource development, events, professional development delivery).
3.  Any funding agreements, reports, or accountability documents submitted to the Ministry
by these associations regarding their NEX funding use.
4.  Any communications or internal documentation that discuss or summarises the use or
effectiveness of NEX funding by these science-related associations.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
In response to part one of your request, the amount of Networks of Expertise (NEX) funding
allocated to each organisation between the period of 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024, per
their total contract value with the Ministry, is $237,500 excluding GST.
I am releasing the provider spend and reports or accountability documents requested in parts two
and three of your request in part, as Appendix A, as detailed in the Appendix A Document
Table below. I am withholding some information under the following sections of the Act:
•  Section 9(2)(a), to protect the privacy of natural persons.

• Section 9(2)(b)(i ), to protect information where the making available of the information
would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who
supplied or who is the subject of the information.
I am releasing the funding agreements requested in part three of your request in part, as
Appendix B, as detailed in the Appendix B Document Table below. I am withholding some
information under sections 9(2)(a) and 9(2)(b)(i ) of the Act, as above.
As required under section 9(1) of the Act, I have considered the public interest in releasing the
information withheld. I do not consider that the public interest considerations favouring the release
of this information are sufficient to outweigh the need to withhold it at this time.
We have identified no communications or internal documentation discussing or summarising the
use or effectiveness of NEX funding by these organisations, so I am refusing part four of your
request under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information requested does not exist or, despite
reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
The Ministry does have some information relating to NEX on its PLD website which may be of
interest to you: https://pld.education.govt.nz/peer-to-peer-support/networks-of-expertise/.
