Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation (DOC), received on 28 April
2025, in which you asked for:
•
How much DOC spent on maintaining the Orongorongo Track (Catchpool to
Orongorongo River only, not high water track) in each of the years 2020 - 2025. Please
include breakdown of major costs (bridge engineering, construction, track design etc).

How much DOC has spent on legal advice/ consultants etc regarding Orongorongo
private hut phase out in each of the years 2020 – 2025.

a) Our accounting system up until 2023 did not break down costs to a track level therefore
this information must be refused under section 18(e) of the Act.
b) A high number of the operation expenses shown is classified as “unassigned”. This limits
the usefulness of the data meaning it may not be a true reflection of
actual expenditure
on the track.

Note: There were no capital costs for bridges for the Orongorongo Track as described in the
years 2020 – 2025.
2.
How much DOC has spent on legal advice/ consultants etc regarding Orongorongo private
hut phase out in each of the years 2020 – 2025.
DOC has not spent any money on consultants or on securing external legal advice on the phase
out of the private huts in the Orongorongo Valley.
