1. Thank you for your official information request to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), dated 26
April 2025, for the fol owing –
I am writing to request the number of complaints and the outcomes of those complaints since January
1st 2020 regarding low level flights around the area forming a box between Te Horo Beach, Te Horo
township and the Otaki river. This is approx 3km WNW of Otaki airstrip/NZOT
I am also requesting the number of complaints and outcomes of any complaints about persons on the
ground in the same area attempting to interfere with flights via dazzling with laser pointers, mirrors
or any other mechanism
2. CAA has received one complaint about low level flying in the Otaki Airstrip area since
1 January 2020. This incident occurred at Otaki River mouth on 20 March 2021 where a pilot
undergoing a solo training flight in a non-passenger plane was al eged to have taken that
plane below 500ft to avoid another aircraft. There were no injuries or fatalities associated
with the event.
3. CAA investigated the above complaint and educational action was initiated.
4. CAA has not received any complaints about persons on the ground in the same area
attempting to interfere with flights via dazzling with laser pointers, mirrors or any other
mechanism.
