On 9 Haratua 2025 Te Puni Kōkiri transferred your request to my office as the information
requested is more closely connected with my responsibilities as the Minister for Māori
Development.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982 (
OIA
1982).
I have a responsibility as the Minister for Māori Development, under section 20 of Te Ture
mō te Reo Māori 2016 (
Reo Māori Act), to appoint two members to the Board of Te Mātāwai.
A public call for nominations or a need to interview nominees is not required under the Reo
Māori Act and was therefore not conducted for this appointment process. Therefore, an
advert was not created, applications from the public were not received and interviews were
not conducted. I received the nomination for Mr Kleskovic among other nominations through
ministerial consultation and I concluded Mr Kleskovic was the most suitable candidate to
recommend to the Appointments and Honours Cabinet committee for appointment to the
Board of Te Mātāwai.
In response to the part of your request seeking a copy of Mr Kleskovic’s appointment letter
and information on the remuneration for this appointment, I have decided to release to you a
copy of this letter. You will note that this correspondence also provides information relating

to remuneration. Some information has been withheld consistent with section 9(2)(a) of the
OIA 1982 to protect the privacy of natural persons.
Finally, I am refusing the part of your request seeking the terms of reference for the board
of Te Mātāwai and the job description under section 18(e) as these documents do not exist.
The function and role of the Board of Te Mātāwai is publicly available and described in full
in
Part 3 of the Reo Māori Act. Additionally, if you wish to find out more about Te Mātāwai
please refer to their website at
https://www.tematawai.maori.nz/
I trust my response satisfies your request.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this response.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at
