Response to your request for information Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) on 21 April to
the Minister of Health, Hon Simeon Brown. As you will be aware, the Minister is focused on
delivering access to timely, quality healthcare for all New Zealanders.
You requested:
“you said theres more doctors now than ever - can you send me the info you based
that on?? numbers, briefings, whatevers available. has it actually kept up with
demand though?? eds are packed and gps got wait lists weeks long. whats going
on??”

This shows that, since 2023, the number of doctors employed by Health New Zealand has
increased by over 200 to December 2024. Additionally, the number of nurses employed by
Health New Zealand has increased by over 1,700 over the same time period.
As the Minister has said, the Government has made its expectations clear to Health New
Zealand that the agency must maintain a strong focus on frontline services to ensure all New
Zealanders can access timely, quality healthcare.
As the information requested is publicly available, section 18(d) of the Act applies to your
