Dear Andrew Riddell
Official Information Act request: Topic of ‘degrowth’
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request, received on 9 April 2025.
You requested:
“Dear Christopher Luxon,
Recently, in answering some questions in Parliament, you have referred to degrowth.
I am trying to understand what you think degrowth is, its meaning.
Please provide copies of all correspondence, briefings and other communications you
have received since 9 October 2024 on or about the topic of 'degrowth’….”
‘Degrowth’ is broadly accepted as an economic theory that references principles based upon
shrinking rather than growing economies to match the energy and resources available.
Further context is readily available online if you are interested in knowing more about the
subject.
Searches of our records have not identified any correspondence, briefings or other
communications on or about the topic of 'degrowth’. Accordingly, I have refused your request
for the information requested above under section 18(e) of the Act – as the information
requested does not exist.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
Yours sincerely
Cameron Burrows
Chief of Staff
