Thank you for your email of 4 April 2025 requesting, under the Of icial Information Act 1982
(the Act), information regarding the position of Deputy Inspector-General of Defence.
Specifically, you requested:
I noted, you have recently call for nomination for Deputy Inspector-General of
Defence https://www.justice.govt.nz/about/statutory-vacancies/#DepInspector may I
ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call for
public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. A copy of your ad as well. Also, how many
applications you have received from the public and how many you have received
from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role.
How many you have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed. Also, can I
request to view the appointment letter if there is one sent to the previous appointee.

ease of reference, I have separated out your request and responded to each part.

Expressions of interest were sought via a posting on the Ministry’s website, in Capital Letter
and in Law Points. A copy of the position that was advertised is attached to this letter as
Document 1 and is released to you in full.

The Ministry received eight applications for the position of the Deputy Inspector-General of
Defence and they were al from individuals responding to the call for expressions of interest.
There were no nominations from any other agency.
Three candidates have been shortlisted for the position. The interviews are stil pending.
Can I request to view the appointment letter if there is one sent to the previous
appointee.
There has not been a previous appointment to this position. As such, this part of your
request is refused under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information does not exist.

Deputy Inspector-General of Defence
Applications are invited from persons wishing to be considered for appointment as the 1982
Deputy Inspector-General of Defence (Deputy IGD). This is a full-time position based in
Wellington.
ACT
The role of the Office of the IGD is to:
• provide the Minister with dedicated independent oversight of the New Zealand
Defence Force (NZDF)
• support the Minister in their responsibility to the House of representatives for the
activities of the NZDF
• assure the public that the activities of the NZDF are subject to independent scrutiny ,
including in relation to the NZDF’s compliance with New Zealand’s obligations under
international law.
INFORMATION
Key functions of the Office of the IGD are:

and any subsequent acts or omissions of the NZDF in relation to those incident;.

Expressions of interest are invited for the position of Deputy Inspector-General of Defence
(Deputy IGD). This is a full-time position based in Wellington.
ACT
The Inspector-General of Defence is a statutory office, established to provide independent
oversight of the New Zealand Defence Force. The role was set up in response to a
recommendation from the Inquiry into Operation Burnham.
The functions of the Inspector-General are to investigate incidents that occur in the course of
activities of the Defence Force, and to assess and identify potential improvements to
Defence Force policies and procedures.
