On 16 June 2025 Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (the
Ministry) received your request for the following information under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act):
6. Information on policies addressing the economic and workforce implications of declining
population, including housing availability.
This part of your request was transferred to the Ministry by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and
Employment (MBIE).
The Ministry is implementing a suite of policies focused on housing supply, urban planning, and
infrastructure funding, while also exploring the long-term implications of demographic change on
housing systems.
The Going for Housing Growth programme (GfHG) is part of the Government’s broader plan to
tackle New Zealand’s ongoing housing shortage. You can read more about GfHG on our website
at:
www.hud.govt.nz/our-work/going-for-housing-growth-programme. The Ministry’s 2023 Long-term Insights Briefing considered the implications of our ageing
population for our housing and urban futures. You can read this on our website at:
www.hud.govt.nz/our-work/long-term-insights-briefing-2023. We believe these two resources answer your request and it is therefore refused under section
18(d) of the Act, as the information requested is publicly available.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of my response by the Ombudsman, in
accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details can be found on the Ombudsman’s
website at:
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz. As part of our ongoing commitment to openness and transparency, the Ministry proactively
releases information and documents that may be of interest to the public. As such, this response,
with your personal details removed, may be published on our website.
