Dear Pauline

Response to your request for information

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) on 7 March
2025 to the Minister of Health, Hon Simeon Brown. You requested:

“Today (7 March 2025) it was reported on RNZ that Minister Simeon Brown received
"Advice from the Ministry of Health clearly states that lowering the age to 58 for all
New Zealanders wil  save even more lives than the previous government's approach
to lower the age to 50 for Māori and Pacific Peoples only.
Can you please provide a copy of this advice in detail? "

The Government has agreed to progressively lower the age of eligibility for bowel cancer
screening tests to align with Australia, which is 45 years old. By delivering the first step of
lowering the age to 58, more lives wil  be saved.

Advice regarding changes to the National Bowel Screening Programme has been proactively
released at the following link:

and-drawdown-of-the-budget-2022-tagged-contingency.

publicly available.

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review any
decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at:
