Official Information Act request: Human Rights Review Tribunal – Panel Members
Thank you for your email of 27 February 2025, requesting under the Of icial Information Act
1982 (the Act), information regarding the appointment of members to the Human Rights
Review Tribunal (the Tribunal). Specifically, you requested:
“I noted, you have recently call for nomination for your Human Rights Review
Tribunal / Taraipiunara Mana Tangata - Panel Members and expressions of
interest close 5.00 p.m today. https://www.justice.govt.nz/about/statutory-
vacancies/#HRRTMember May I ask how you called for public nomination and
on what platform you have call for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website.
Also, given it is close today, may I ask how many applications you have
received from the public and how many you have received from other
nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for each location
of your role (separate to Auckland, Hamilton and Whangarei). May I also seek
a copy of the appointment letter sent to the previous appointee (one example
is sufficient), feel free to redact any personal information. Further, how many
people you want to recruit for this round.”
For ease of reference, I have separated out your request and responded to each part.

How you called for public nomination and on what platform?
Calls for expression of interest were made via the Ministry of Justice’s website and
LawPoints.
Nominations were sought by the Associate Minister of Justice, Hon Nicole McKee to caucus
colleagues by way of letter. Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa (The Māori Law Society), the
Pacific Lawyers Association and the New Zealand Asian Lawyers were also notified of the
public call for expressions of interest.

How many applications you have received from the public and how many you have
received from other nominating agencies…for each location of your role (separate to
Auckland, Hamilton and Whangarei).
In total, 35 expressions of interest have been received, 3 of which were by way of
nomination from members of caucus. A breakdown of the number expressions of interest
received broken down by location can be found in the table below.
