Thank you for your email on 18 February 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for the
following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
“Amount of funding given by the ACC to assist Respective North Island ED in New Zealand
for years 2023 and 2024.”
Response
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) revenue allocated to all North Island Emergency
Departments (EDs) for the 2023 and 2024 calendar years is shown in the table below. Please note,
this is less than 0.5% of the annual total ACC revenue received by North Island District Hospitals
for the corresponding years.

Health NZ is funded to cover the cost of accident-related injuries that present to a public hospital
during the first seven days of treatment.
Beyond the seven days, Health NZ will seek reimbursement from ACC for the cost of ongoing
injury-related treatments that may include surgeries, rehabilitation and other follow-up care. This
explains the extremely low level of ACC funding allocated to Hospitals as patients requiring
ongoing treatment will transfer to specialist hospital units before the seven day period ends.
