the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA):

“How much money has the New Zealand Government received from USAID 
between 1 January 2021 and 1 January 2025?

How much was given to NZ media?

what are the names and amounts received by each outlet

How much was given to non media projects?

How much has Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade given away in foreign aid 
from 1 January 2021 to 1 January 2025?

Who were the recipients and what was the amount received by each

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the Ministry) has received no funding from 
USAID between 1 January 2021 and 1 January 2025. The Ministry is not in a position to 
respond on behalf of other agencies. Accordingly, parts 1-5 of your request are refused 
under section 18(e) of the OIA, as the information does not exist.  
 
In response to part 6 of your request, the Ministry provided NZ$3,894,008,478 of 
International Development Cooperation (IDC) funding between 1 January 2021 and 
31 December 2024. 
 
Part 7 of your request is refused under section 18(d) of the OIA, as the information is 
publicly available. DevData (https://devdata.mfat.govt.nz/) is a website launched by the 
Ministry aimed at improving the transparency of New Zealand’s IDC activities. DevData 
is interactive, allowing users to find and download detailed information, updated 
monthly.   
 
You can run an enquiry on DevData based on location (by country) and timeframe 
(financial or calendar year) that will provide the following detailed information on

There is information on DevData on 1353 activities in the period of your request 
(1 January 2021 – 31 December 2024). In total DevData contains information on over 
2400 activities implemented from 2012 onwards. 
 
The following activities are excluded from DevData: Where we have specific concerns 
relating to security/safety, privacy, sensitive/confidential information, or harm to 
operations and small-scale activities delivered through Head of Mission/Embassy funds. 
Excluded activities are a small sub-set of the IDC Programme – they account for 2.2% of 
total expenditure for the period 1 January 2021 – 31 December 2024.
