Dear Harriet
I refer to your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), on 29 January 2025 asking:
“where the third main goes and where the fourth main goes especially at Middlemore Railway Station.”
We have considered your request, please see the information provided below and attached.
The Auckland Rail Programme Business Case (ARPBC), which we have shared with you, contains current
assessments regarding building a fourth track on the Auckland network.
Subsequent to the ARPBC, KiwiRail has carried out an early exploratory design exercise on the section of the
fourth main through Middlemore on the Southern Line, with the intent to support subsequent business case
phases.
Please find attached a summary document released under Section 16(1)(e) which summarises the
exploratory phase work for four tracks through Middlemore.
We intend to continue to use the Auckland rail web pages as a channel to release further information:
https://www.kiwirail.co.nz/our-network/our-regions/amp/ . So keep an eye on KiwiRail’s website and let me
know if you have further questions.
This decision has been made under the OIA. You have the right to seek an investigation and review of this
response by the Ombudsman, in accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details can be found
on the Ombudsman’s website:
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
Yours sincerely
