rd 10A, Wakari Hospital, myself along with colleagues would like to speak up, and recognise as part of our duty of care to each other and to Ward 10
A patients. We feel the need to notify Management, Health & Safety Representatives, Unions (NZNO, PSA) and WorkSafe of serious health and safe
ty risks and challenges which exist on Ward 10A. Embedded security helps to reduce some of these risks. We would like to voice concerns of the pla
n to remove embedded security from Ward 10A. Please find our concerns below: The complexity of the ward's patient mix, the poor ward layout an
d condition have created an unsafe working environment. 10A houses people of both sexes with forensic histories and with intellectual disabilities
and/or mental health issues, all of whom when escalated pose a serious risk to others. This is supported by the Chief Ombudsman who has deemed
10A as not fit for purpose and a “volatile environment” This environment requires a unique approach, and embedded security is something that is
needed to keep people safe, especially up until the wa d renovation is completed and is returned to being a facility that is fit for purpose. A recent
experience highlighting the importance of having embedded security immediately on hand, was when a patient physically escalated and assaulted
staff without any early warning signs. One staff member was punched, the other two staff members were unable to successfully carry out a restrain
t. Other staff were not readily available as that were all carrying out patient cares in various parts of ward. The embedded security standing by in a c

entrally and easily accessible location arrived very quickly on scene and assisted to complete the restraint. If security had not been on hand, more a
ssaults and greater harm would have resulted to staff. Our patient population are often impulsive, unpredictable and often don’t show early warnin
g signs, meaning assaults can happen without warning. These incidents happen extremely fast, and response time is critical. Having security availabl
e in an immediate vicinity is extremely important to lessen the risks of potential harm and injury. External security takes a significant time to arrive,
often well after the assaults and harm has occurred. I took a quick survey from 9 staff on PM shift today, and 8 from 9 staff supported retention of e
