Brief Outline of the Functions and Responsibilities of the Organisation

Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa, the Outdoor Access Commission (legally the New Zealand Walking
Act
Access Commission) is responsible for leading and supporting the negotiation, establishment,
maintenance and improvement of outdoor access (including walkways, which are one form of
walking access) over public and private land.
In meeting its purpose, the Commission:
a. administers a national strategy on outdoor access, in consultation with other
organisations with an interest in access to the outdoors;

b. provides information about the location of walking access and rights and responsibilities
when accessing the outdoors;
c. leads and supports the negotiation, establishment and improvement of walking access

and additional rights such as cycling access (including across private land); and

d. provides advice on outdoor access matters to the Minister, central and local government
and other interested organisations and individuals.
