Official Information Act request: Coroner positions
Thank you for your email of 16 January 2025 to the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry),
requesting, under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act) information about the Coroner’s
position. Specifically, you requested:
“May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call
for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. Also, how many applications you have
received from the public and how many you have received from other nominating
agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role. May I also seek a copy
of the appointment letter sent to the previous appointee (one example is sufficient) ,
feel free to redact any personal information. Also do you issue warrant card to the
Coroner, if so, an example of the warrant card would be much appreciated.”
I have separated your request into parts and wil be responding to your questions in turn.
1. May I ask how you called for public nomination and on what platform you have call
for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website.
The position was advertised on the Ministry’s website here:
Statutory vacancies | New
Zealand Ministry of Justice.
2. Also, how many applications you have received from the public and how many you
have received from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc
for your role.
The Ministry received 63 expressions of interest from the public. No nominations were
received from nominating agencies or other sources.
3. May I also seek a copy of the appointment letter sent to the previous appointee (one
example is sufficient), feel free to redact any personal information.
A copy of the appointment letter template is attached and released to you in full.
4. Also do you issue warrant card to the Coroner, if so, an example of the warrant card
would be much appreciated.
Coroners are not issued with a warrant card. Therefore, I am refusing this part of your request
under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information does not exist.
