Your request for official information, reference: HNZ00076138
Thank you for your email of 8 January 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for the
following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I am seeking information regarding all data currently and previously held by the Ministry of Health
that has been used, or can be used, or could have been used, to directly compare morbidity and
mortality between two groups of people:
1- Those who have received one or more “covid vaccines”, and 2- Those who have not received any “covid vaccines”
Response
Please see table below showing mortality data for COVID-19 unvaccinated and vaccinated
individuals with a cardiovascular disease hospital admission history. The below data is the only
information we hold that could have been used to compare morbidity and all-cause mortality
following COVID-19 vaccination. However, there has been no further work to ascertain a link on
whether the vaccine contributed to the deaths.
Comirnaty mRNA vaccinated
Cohort size
Deaths
No
32,852
2,296
Yes
27,400
1,306
Notes:
•
Comirnaty mRNA vaccinated: Indicates vaccination status (Yes/No) of the two cohorts.
•
Cohort size: Total number of individuals included in each cohort.
•
Deaths: Number of deaths due to all causes observed in each cohort during the period
between 1 January 2021 and 31 January 2022.
The table summarizes mortality data for two cohorts: (1) unvaccinated and (2) Comirnaty mRNA
vaccinated individuals with a public hospital admission for myocardial infarction, heart failure,
and/or all other cardiovascular diseases and discharged to a home setting in 2021. All individuals
were 11+ years of age. Unvaccinated individuals were followed from their latest hospital discharge
date up until their death, the end of the period (31 January 2022) or the date of their first
vaccination (whichever comes first).
For further information regarding mortality, including risk ratios following COVID-19 vaccination,
please refer to tables 6, 7 and 8 on the Medsafe website at
www.medsafe.govt.nz/COVID-
19/safety-report-46.asp. Please note, these figures do not compare individuals with morbidities.
