Thank you for your email to the Ministry of Health, which was transferred to Health New Zealand | 
Te Whatu Ora on 20 December 2024, asking for the following under the Official Information Act 
1982 (the Act):  
“Please provide data for the last 5 years for the number of publicly funded hospital 
procedures discharged to the private system for completion. 
Please split this by major specialty (general surgery, neurology, respiratory, etc.) and also 
split by inpatient/outpatient.” 
Response 
We sincerely apologise for the delay in providing you with this response. 
Hospitals perform numerous procedures, including those without complications or with minor 
complexity, therefore, we have included we have included all procedures from elective surgical 
specialties, as well as surgical procedures performed in Cardiology and procedures in 
Gastroenterology. Whilst we do not hold data on decisions to perform procedures in private 
facilities, we can provide the volume based on records of procedures performed in private facilities.

All publicly funded procedures from elective surgical specialties and cardiology 
between financial years 2019/20 – 2023/24. 
Please note: 
•  The data provided for this response is provisional. It has not been through the full quality 
assurance process that we use before publishing data and therefore may be subject to 
change. 
•  Th data includes events funded by Ministry of Health and District Health Boards. 
•  Data Source: National Minimum Dataset for Inpatients (NMDS) and National Non-admitted 
Patient Collection (NNPAC). 
•  Data extracted: 4 March 2025 
•  Day case means same day procedures (do not require overnight stay). 
•  Diagnosis-related groups that require clinical details to determine whether the treatment 
involved a procedure is excluded.
