[FYI request #29547 email]
Tēnā koe Valentino,
Your request for official information, reference: HNZ00075247
Thank you for your email on 12 December 2024, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for
the following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Please provide data for the number of hospital procedures on an annual basis split by
private & public hospitals for the last 5 years. If possible please break this down further by
major specialty type (General surgery, neurology, respiratory, etc.). Additionally, if it is
possible to break this down the number of procedures by day surgery vs comprehensive it
would be useful.
Ideally if this can be provided nationally and then also the data for the Auckland PHO.
Response
Hospital discharge data for public and private hospitals is publicly available online in an interactive
web tool:
https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/for-health-professionals/data-and-statistics/hospital-
event/web-tool
It includes the last 5 years of data and breaks down procedure numbers by procedure block codes
(or chapters).
The National Minimum Dataset, which is the ultimate source of this information, does not record
information on Primary Health Organisation (PHO) enrolment. To provide this data for patients
registered in a given PHO is a complex technical task that would require linking of multiple
databases.
This would effectively mean that we would have to create new information to respond to your
request, for which there is no obligation under the Act. Accordingly, the last part of your request is
refused under section 18(g) of the Act, that the information is not held by Health NZ nor another
agency subject to the Act.
