OIA: 1340701 – Voluntary Redundancy Applications
Thank you for your email of 28 November 2024 to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry)
requesting the following information:
1. The number of Voluntary Redundancy applications that have been accepted listed by
role, salary range and the number of years the employee has worked at the Ministry of
Education.
2. The number of Voluntary Redundancy applications that have been declined listed by
role, salary range, the reasons the applications were declined, and the number of years
the employee has worked at the Ministry of Education.
Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
In response to your request for the number of accepted and declined Voluntary Redundancy
applications, I can advise that the Ministry held two windows for Voluntary Redundancy
applications as part of the Ministry’s change process, between 27 August 2024 and 9 September
2024, and between 25 October 2024 and 14 November 2024. During those dates, 151 eligible
applications were received.
As of 3 December 2024, 85 of those applications had been accepted, four were on hold, four had
been withdrawn and 58 were declined. This does not include staff members whose roles were
disestablished and who subsequently opted to take redundancy.
Providing a list of applications by role, salary range, number of years the employee has worked for
the Ministry and reasons the applications were declined could lead to individuals being revealed,
due to the level of detail requested and the relatively small dataset. I am therefore withholding this
information under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect the privacy of natural persons.
As required under section 9(1) of the Act, I have considered the public interest in releasing the
information withheld. I do not consider the public interest considerations favouring the release of
this information are sufficient to outweigh the need to withhold it at this time.
Please note, we may publish this response on our website after five working days. Your name and
contact details will be removed.

on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the Act. You can do this by writing to
