Tēnā koe Mark
Thank you for your request of 15 February 2025, to Fire and Emergency New Zealand requesting
information in relation to a fire in Huntly on 9 November 2024, under the Official Information Act
1982 (OIA). We copy and respond to each aspect of your request below.
1. Can Fire and Emergency confirm that the initial caller had called back asking why the fire
brigade had not arrived (SMS Report 00:51:17), and they suggested responding further
resources to the incident?
2. Can Fire and Emergency confirm that the calltaker quickly dismissed the callers concerns
saying they wil be there soon and terminated the 111 call?
As advised in our previous responses, we consider emergency cal s received by Fire and Emergency
to be subject to a high obligation of confidence, and we believe that there would be a chil ing
effect if callers were aware that details about their calls may be made public without their
consent. Callers may be less forthcoming with the information they provide to Fire and Emergency
or may simply choose not to call. In this instance, and after multiple attempts, we have been
unable to obtain consent from the caller to provide any detail about the content of their calls.
For this reason, we have decided to withhold the requested information about the 111 calls made
under section 9(2)(ba)(i) of the OIA, to protect information, which is subject to an obligation of
confidence, where the making available of the information would be likely to prejudice the supply
of similar information, or information from the same source, and it is in the public interest that
such information should continue to be supplied.
Please note that to the extent that answering a request requires Fire and Emergency to form an
opinion or create new information, rather than rely on information that already exists, there is no
requirement under the OIA for us do so.
3. I have been made aware of a further email that was sent to "Comcen Northern - Brown
Watch" by the Shift Manager regarding recording messages. This email was sent to staff on
Friday 22/11/2024 outlining expectations and included the content of the OIA request that
was initially made for this OIA. Would you please also supply this email?
Please find the requested email attached as the
Appendix to this response. In responding to your
previous request in relation to this fire, you advised that you do not require the names or contact
details of our staff or volunteers. In line with this, where these appear in the attached, they have
been label ed as
out of scope.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available
at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or

We trust that the information being provided is of assistance. If you require further information,
please email [FENZ request email]
