Response to request for information regarding the Aratere grounding at Picton in June 2024 
I refer to your request to Maritime NZ via the FYI site on 31 October 2024, as follows:  
“Please provide me the redacted, for public issue, report of  the findings  from the grounding of 
the ship Aratere near Picton during June 2024” 
We have considered your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). Our investigation 
into this incident is ongoing and we are not able to provide any information in relation to this incident 
at this time, further to that already reported in the media. At this stage, we are unable to determine 
when the investigation wil  conclude. We are therefore refusing your full request under section 6(c) 
of the Act because the making available of the information would be likely to prejudice the 
maintenance of the law, including the prevention, investigation, and detection of offences, and the 
right to a fair trial. 
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
