Your request for official information, reference: HNZ00097197
Thank you for your email on 31 August 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora
(Health NZ) for the following under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA):
“…how many personnel, approximately, funded by MoH are in prescribed positions
that are required to have vulnerable children checks?”
Response
I apologise for the delay in providing our response. The time taken is not what we aspire to.
This is something we are working to get on top of as we deal with a high volume of requests
and the understandably high public interest in our work.
We have interpreted your request as referring to Health NZ employees in roles that require
children worker safety checks in line with The Children’s Act 2014. We have used Health NZ
payroll data to help us provide a response to best answer your request.
All Children’s Worker roles subject to The Children’s Act 2014 are classified in Health NZ
payroll systems as either Core Children’s workers or Non-Core Children’s workers. Children
safety checks are recorded against an employee rather than the role resulting in a variance
between the number of roles that require a children safety check and the number of
employees filling these roles. For example, some roles may be vacant, or employees may fill
multiple roles across different districts concurrently. Additionally, whether a role or employee
requires a children safety check is under constant review.
Therefore, with this context in mind, we can provide an approximate number of Health NZ
employees who have a current children worker safety check rather than the roles that
require the safety check.
Health NZ payroll systems data shows approximately over 60,000 employees had a current
children safety check as at 3 September 2025.
You can find more information about Health NZ’s children safety check policies on our
