Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 2 October 2024.
You wrote:
How many people have the Police charged with manslaughter, in the last 10
years, in the following circumstances.
The person charged (person A), was in proximity to the person who died (person
B), where person B caused their own overdose without direct involvement of
person A.
Please provide a reference to the specific cases.
I am only aware of one incident which fits the criteria you have described. Information
about that incident is publicly available on the Ministry of Justice website1.
To identify all such incidents is not possible as the information requested is not held by
Police to the specific level you are interested in.
Police has initiated more than 230 proceedings for manslaughter since 1 July 20142 and
the detailed information to identify the circumstances that you are interested in is not
recorded.
Therefore, your request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA as the information
requested is not held.
As part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police proactively releases
some information and documents that may be of interest to the public. An anonymised
version of this response may be publicly released on the New Zealand Police website.
