Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation, received on 20 September
2024, in which you asked:
Are there any grazing concession in place for the Waiwhakaiho Road Conservation
area, bordering the Meeting of the Waters Scenic Reserve, south of New Plymouth
City. If so please prove a copy of the documentation.
Is the land under the Freedom Camping Act.
We have considered your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982.
Your questions and our responses are listed below:

Are there any grazing concession in place for the Waiwhakaiho Road Conservation
area? If so please prove a copy of the documentation.
There are no active grazing concessions for Waiwakaiho Road Conservation Area.
2.
Is the land under the Freedom Camping Act?
Freedom camping means to camp on public land outside of a formal campsite (on the side of
a road, at a parking area, by the coast etc) using:
• a motor vehicle,
• tent,
• bivouac,
• or another type of temporary structure.

Freedom camping is allowed on much of DOC managed public conservation land – but there
are exceptions, and special conditions apply in some areas.
