I refer to your email of 19 September 2024 to the Department of the Prime Minister and
Cabinet (DPMC), requesting under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), information on
the public nominations for the Ministerial Advisory Group for Retail Crime MAG. Specifically,
you requested:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/indonz/528354/government-confirms-members-of-
advisory-group-on-retail-crime https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/members-
appointed-retail-crime-mag May I ask how you cal ed for public nomination and on
what platform you have call for public nominations e.g. govt.jobs website. Also, how
many applications you have received from the public and how many you have received
from other nominating agencies such as TPK or Ministry of women etc for your role.
How many you have shortlisted and how many you have interviewed in this
recruitment round. May I also seek a copy of the ad went out to public and the
appointment letter sent to the appointee, feel free to redact any personal information.
On 24 September 2024, your request was partially transferred from DPMC to Hon Paul
Goldsmith, Minister of Justice, for response.
On 21 October 2024, Hon Paul Goldsmith, transferred your request to the Ministry of Justice
(the Ministry) to respond to, as the Ministry holds the information you have requested.
In response to your request, the process for appointing the members of the MAG on victims
of retail crime was through a targeted expression of interest process. There was no public
advertisement for these roles. Communities, organisations and individuals in the retail,
security and crime prevention sectors were encouraged to submit an application, and the
Ministry also received applications from interested members of the community after the
press release on the establishment of the MAG here:
Government creates MAG for retail
crime victims | Beehive.govt.nz.
Twenty-five applications were received from members of the public including business
owners, those with extensive retail experience, members of governance boards, CE/CEOs
of retail sector peak bodies, employees of large retail organisations with experience in crime
prevention and business owners in the security and crime prevention spaces. No
applications were received from public service departments or agencies nominating a
particular individual.
A longlist of all 25 applications, marked against the assessment criteria included in the
expression of interest form, were provided to Hon Paul Goldsmith, and Hon Nicole McKee,
the Associate Minister of Justice. The Chair of the MAG, Sunny Kaushal, also reviewed
applications. No interviews were conducted during this expression of interest process. The
final decision on the appointment of the four members were made by Hon Paul Goldsmith
and Hon Nicole McKee.
I have attached three documents for you. The first two documents are the email and the
expression of interest form that was attached to the email. This form was provided to
interested parties and they were asked to complete and submit it alongside their curriculum
vitae. Also attached is a sample of the appointment letter sent to the new members of the
MAG, with their personal details withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Act to protect the
privacy of natural persons.
In withholding information under section 9, the Ministry has considered the public interest
and does not consider it outweighs withholding the information at this time.
