Thank you for your email of 21 August 2024 making the following request under the Of icial
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
I would like to request copies of all correspondence dated since 1 January 2010
involving the Ministry for the Environment and any reports generated or received by
the Ministry for the Environment since 1 January 2000, regarding the prospect of
nuclear power generation in New Zealand.
The Ministry for the Environment (the Ministry) has identified seven email conversations in
scope of your request, as listed in the below table. We have not identified any reports in
scope of your request.
I am releasing one of these documents to you in full. I am releasing six documents to you in
part, with some information withheld under the following sections of the Act:
9(2)(a)
to protect the privacy of natural persons.
18(d)
as the information is already publicly available.
Documents 1, 2, and 4 are records of correspondence between the Ministry, Ministers’
offices, and members of the public about the topic.
Document 3 is a record of internal Ministry correspondence about the topic.
Documents 5 and 6 are records of correspondence between the Ministry and the Ministry of
Foreign Af airs and Trade about the topic.
Document 7 is an email conversation between a Ministry staf member in their capacity as a
board member of Engineering New Zealand, a non-governmental professional body, and
their fellow board members. The staff member used their Ministry email address in error and
the content of the document does not represent the views or internal work of the Ministry.
In terms of section 9(1) of the Act, I am satisfied that, in the circumstances, the withholding
of this information is not outweighed by other considerations that render it desirable to make
the information available in the public interest.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Of ice of the Ombudsman of
my decision to withhold information relating to this request, in accordance with section 28(3)
of the Act. The relevant details can be found on their website at:
