Dear Benjamin
Official Information Act request OIA 24.131 MATH199 grades
I refer to the Official Information Act request dated 12 August 2024 for information relating to MATH199 at
the University of Canterbury (UC). You have specifical y requested:
•
I request the number of students taking the AIMS MATH199 STAR course each year. Out of these, how
many began study at the University of Canterbury the fol owing year(s).
•
I request the number of students who received an A+ grade in the course each year, and out of those
how many began study at the University with MATH199 AIMS scholarships each year.
•
I request the number of students who began study at the University with MATH199 STAR scholarships,
and what the average grade % of the recipients were, each year.
Please see attached spreadsheets.
Note that the MATH199 AIMS which the request is recorded under and MATHS199 STAR are two different
scholarships. In addition, the AIMS scholarship began in 2015 and started being paid into in 2016, so the years
preceding 2016 are refused under OIA s 18(e), as the information does not exist.
The University does not have the average grade percentage of the recipients for either scholarship. Under the
Act, there is no obligation on a public agency to create information to answer a request. Therefore, this part of
the request is refused under OIA s 18(e).
Final y, where there are five or less students in a particular category, the actual number is not provided, rather
a range of less than or equal to five (≤5). This is to protect the individual’s privacy under s 9(2)(a) of the Act. It
is in the public interest that individuals are not identifiable when providing information about course numbers.
As we are stil waiting on further information (namely, the section around A+ grades), we are releasing what
we have in the interests of good faith.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
