Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 2 August 2024. You
requested:
Please provide details of all incidents recorded in any police systems as "hate
speech", "hate incidents", "hate" or in any other way related to hate, over the
months of June and July 2024.
Please note, due to the high volume of OIA requests on this topic Police is working on
publishing information related to hate-motivated crime and the related hate-motivated
crime training. This aims to address concerns and questions that have been raised
regarding this.
Providing details of individual occurrences recorded in Police systems is likely to
jeopardise the privacy of the people involved. Therefore your request is refused and the
information is withheld pursuant to s9(2)(a) of the OIA to protect the privacy of natural
persons, including that of deceased natural persons.
Please note that as part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police
proactively releases some information and documents that may be of interest to the
public. An anonymised version of this response may be publicly released on the New
Zealand Police website.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
