Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 request dated 27 July 2024. You wrote:
I request the number of incidents per year since 2019 that NZ Police have been
called to or are aware of on Wellington's Church Street.

A general breakdown of the types of incidents would also be appreciated.
When Police communication centres receive a request for service, an event is entered in
the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) application.
There were 459 recorded CAD events that happened between 1 January 2019 and 31
July 2024 at Church Street in Central Wellington. This may include events that occurred
inside or outside the buildings, but excludes events considered to be police-generated
(such as traffic stops or bail checks). Not all of these events would have been attended by
police. Policing by its very nature requires constant prioritisation of resources to respond
to emergency demand. Police will always prioritise and attend the jobs where peoples’
lives or safety are in danger. The table below shows these by the type of event at closure
(when most information about an event is known).

Data in this response is drawn from a dynamic operational database and is subject to
change as new information is recorded or updated.
A change in the number of requests for service to an area can be driven by a change in
local infrastructure or how an area is used. For example, new residential buildings would
mean an increase in resident population, which may lead to more reports to Police. In this
instance, I have not offered an explanation on any change in the requests for service data
because this has not been requested and would require further analysis, which is outside
of the OIA requirements.
Please note that as part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police
proactively releases some information and documents that may be of interest to the
public. An anonymised version of this response may be publicly released on the New
Zealand Police website.
