Description
The Senior Scholar Award was established in 2010 by the University of Auckland Council.
 
The main purpose of the Awards is to recognise the graduating students who obtained the highest marks in their
undergraduate programme. Each Faculty will be allocated a number of Awards based on the number of students who
have met the requirements to be eligible to graduate.
Selection process
- The Award will be made by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the relevant Dean of
Faculty or their nominee
Regulations
1. The Award shall be known as the Senior Scholar Award.
2. The Awardees will be known as Senior Scholars.
3. The value of the Award will be $500 each. The Award will be recorded on the recipient’s official academic transcript
and will be announced at Graduation ceremonies.
4. The Award will be granted to students who are eligible to graduate with an undergraduate degree or diploma and
who have achieved the top grade point averages (GPAs) assessed over their last 90 or more points credited to that
degree, commencing with the higher level points most recently taken in their degree. To be eligible for this Award,
recipients must have achieved a minimum GPA of 6.50 across the courses used for this assessment. Awards will be
allocated annually (see Regulations 5-8 and Note I).

5. For the purposes of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (BE(Hons)) students, the Awards will be granted to students
who are eligible to graduate with the BE(Hons) degree and who have achieved the highest honours GPA in the
BE(Hons) degree. To be eligible for this Award, recipients must have achieved a minimum honours GPA of 6.50.
6. For the purposes of MBChB students, the Awards will be granted to students who are eligible to graduate with the
MBChB degree and who have achieved the highest number of distinctions in the Part VI year. To be eligible for this
Award, recipients must have also achieved at least 4 distinctions and achieved an overall distinction in Part V. The
Awards will be allocated annually.
7. For the purposes of students who are eligible to graduate from the Faculty of Education and Social Work with an
undergraduate degree or diploma, the GPA will be assessed over the final 120 points credited to that degree or
diploma.
8. For the purposes of students who are eligible to graduate from the Faculty of Law with an undergraduate degree, the
GPA will be assessed over at least 390 points, including transfer credits. Honours level courses and Exchange
credits will be excluded from the assessment.
9. For the purposes of students who are eligible to graduate from the Faculty of Science with a Bachelor of Science,
Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) or a Graduate Diploma in Science, 600-level and 700-level courses will be
excluded from the assessment.
10. The Award will be made by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the relevant Dean of
Faculty or their nominee.
11. The University of Auckland Council has the power to amend or vary these regulations provided that there is no
departure from the main purpose of the Award.
12. Notes [I]-[III] below are deemed to be Regulations.
Notes
I. A minimum of 90 points must be used to calculate these awards. Beyond that, each Faculty will determine the number
of points to be used to calculate these awards and will notify the Scholarships Committee of its process.
II. Students undertaking a conjoint programme are eligible to receive this award from either or both of the faculties
relating to their programme of study. These awards are not available to students undertaking 120 point Certificate
programmes.
III. Recipients will be notified by the Scholarships Office.
