Official Information Act request: Cases referred to the Coroner 
 
Thank you for your email of 1 July 2024, requesting, under the Of icial Information Act 1982 
(the Act), information relating to cases referred to the Coroner including cases investigated 
and active cases. Specifically, you requested: 
 
From 2015 - 2023 and to include the half-yearly numbers in 2024 can you please provide 
Total Number of Cases Referred to the Coroner Of the above cases can you split this into  
Total Number of Cases Investigated 
Total Number of Cases whereby it was Notified of Coroner's Decision not to open inquiry 
Can you also provide number of active Coronial cases per month, per year since 2015 until 
todays date Average age in days to complete the cases 
 
Pursuant to section 15(1) of the Act, the Ministry of Justice (the Ministry) has decided to 
grant your request in full. However, it wil  take us some time to prepare the information for 
release. We wil  send you the information by 9 August 2024 without undue delay. I apologise 
for any inconvenience this delay may cause you.
