Dear C. Neilson
OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT REQUEST 24.69
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 26 June 2024 for information relating to
residential hal applicants and applications. You have specifical y requested:
•
Could you please tel me which residential hal s had the most applicants put them as their first
preference when applying for a residential col ege in 2024. If you could please list the top 6 in order
of number of first choice applications.
1. Tupuānuku
2. University Hal
3. Rochester and Rutherford Hal
4. Ilam Student Accommodation
5. Arcady Hal
6. Col ege House
Additional y, can you please tel me for the 2024 applications:
•
How many female applicants were put on the general waitlist after the first round of offers were
sent out.
646.
•
How many male applicants were put on the general waitlist after the first round of offers were sent
out.
574.
Please note: some context may be necessary to help interpret this information. It is common practice for many
applicants to apply for accommodation at a number of New Zealand universities. The same applies to the
gender statistics, as this is without the context of the gender statistics for al applicants. The lists of first
preferences for hal s and number of applicants on the general (first round) waitlist gives a misleading view of
the chances of gaining a place within a hal , and does not indicate how many applicants subsequently received
offers.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available
at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
