Dear Caryn Vautier
Request for Information – Local Government Official Information and Meetings
Act (the Act) 1987
We refer to your request of 1 June 2024 for:
Can you please provide me with the statistics and infirmation on how many
accidents over the last 20 years on dowse drive that have warranted a all day
reduced speed And raised crossing.
Response:
Over the past 20 years, 110 crashes on Dowse Drive have been recorded by the
Police. For detailed information, please refer to the attached Excel spreadsheet.
The decision by HCC to adjust speed limits and instal raised crossings isn't solely
based on reported crash numbers. These measures are also aimed at enhancing
accessibility. Hutt City Council's Integrated Transport Strategy (document
link:
Hutt City Council Integrated Transport Strategy) gives more information on
the reasoning behind these network improvements.
Under the 2022 Setting of Speed Limits Rule, HCC was required to lower the speed
limit. However, altering the speed limit alone wouldn't comply with the speed limit
rule. Another measure is the instal ation of the raised zebra crossings. These
crossings were implemented to promote safe speeds around schools and the
neighbourhood centre. For more details, please visit the fol owing webpage:
NZTA
Speed Management Guide.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
