I refer to your information request dated 29 May 2024 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested:
“1) The number of students from each residential college to enter into the MBChb programme
general entry via HSFY for the 2024 commencing class.
2) The lowest waitlist offer for general applicants to the MBChb programme via HSFY for the
2024 commencing class.
3) The lowest first round offer for general applicants to the MBChb programme via HSFY for
the 2024 commencing class.”
Please see below our response to your request.
1. The number of students from each residential college to enter into the MBChb programme
general entry via HSFY for the 2024 commencing class
Subject to the following comments, please see the below table which shows the number of students
who entered the 2024 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme via the
Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) General category, broken down by the Residential College they
resided in:
• the data is correct as at 12 June 2024.
• students who did not reside in a Residential College (e.g., they lived at home or in a flat) are
not included in the data.
• please note that the “Te Rangi Hiroa College” referred to in the table was re-named 192 Castle
College in 2024. Te Rangīhiroa College (the University’s newest College) opened in 2024.
• it is the University’s standard practice to not report on data that relates to fewer than five
students where we consider that such disclosure could affect an individual’s privacy and
wellbeing. Where the numbers are low, there is a risk that the identity of these students could
be determined/inferred, and that their personal information could be revealed. Accordingly,
we note that where there are fewer than five students from a Residential College who entered
the 2024 MB ChB programme via the HSFY General category, we have indicated this using
“<5” (“fewer than five”) – pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act. Despite this refusal, we note
that we have provided you with the total number of students who entered the 2024 MB ChB
programme via the HSFY General category, across all Residential Colleges.

2. The lowest waitlist offer for general applicants to the MBChb programme via HSFY for the
2024 commencing class.
The minimum average academic score to receive an offer from the waitlist to the 2024 MB ChB
programme via the HSFY General category was 89.57
3. The lowest first round offer for general applicants to the MBChb programme via HSFY for
the 2024 commencing class.
The University has two separate categories of data that could be interpreted as “first round offers”:
• Initial release offers: this refers to those who receive offers on the first date that offers are
released – usually on or around 18 December of the year of application for the HSFY and
Graduate categories. The minimum average academic score to receive an initial release offer
to the 2024 MB ChB programme via the HSFY General category was 95.43.
• Non-waitlist offers: this refers to all offers made that were not made from the waitlist. The
minimum average academic score to receive a non-waitlist offer to the 2024 MB ChB
programme via the HSFY General category was 90.14.
